Inspired by longhouses constructed by Native American First Nation peoples, the Mississippi Longhouse is a new home and studio for an accomplished artist, her herbalist arts educator husband, and three sons.
Planned for an undeveloped parcel near the Louisiana/Mississippi border, the 160-foot-long structure houses a five-bedroom residence and studio within a single volume.
Designed to touch the ground lightly, the house is elevated on three dozen helical piers and provides a dramatic view of the densely wooded forest from the living and dining areas. The faceted volume is clad in black metal siding and punctuated by skylights and lightwells.
Separated from the residence by a carport and breezeway, the studio space provides north-facing clerestories and glimpses of the trees.
While local regulations prevent off-grid construction, the water reclamation system, solar panels, and passive design features highlight the owners' desire to live in harmony with the natural surroundings. The completed site will also include a demonstration garden for cultivating native herbs and plants.
