DNA Architecture + Design was invited to contribute a birdhouse to Lotusland’s Birdsong event. Located in Montecito, Lotusland is a picturesque 37 acre botanical garden and historical estate once owned by the late Madame Ganna Walska. The event asked a select group of designers and architects to design birdhouses as part of an outdoor exhibition.
Our entry is intended as a home for acorn woodpeckers, most commonly found in Central and Northern California and also inspired by a love of all things Stars Wars (can you say Death Star?!). The 16” diameter sphere is an exploration of sectional development and an exercise in fabrication.
The completed birdhouse is comprised of over 80 layers of marine grade plywood that form a safe haven for nesting birds. A series of fissures and perforations provide drainage and additional ventilation.
